Conference on Access to Land in Ukraine

Join the Conference on Access to Land and Agroecology – 18th March 2025, Kyiv

A Key Moment for Land and Agroecology in Ukraine

Ukraine stands at a turning point. The ongoing war has deeply affected its agricultural landscape, while EU accession negotiations bring new challenges and opportunities for land governance. In this context, the conference “Access to Land and Agroecology: Experience of EU Countries for Ukraine” on 18th March 2025 in Kyiv provides a platform for vital discussions on sustainable land policies and the future of farming.

Why This Conference Matters

The full-scale Russian invasion has severely disrupted Ukraine’s food production, impacting both local communities and global markets. Despite these challenges, family farms and small-scale producers have shown remarkable resilience. However, major land reforms, introduced even during wartime, have raised serious concerns about land concentration, privatization, and the loss of farmland to industrial agribusiness.

As Ukraine moves towards EU integration, it must address critical issues:

  • Who owns the land? The war has shifted land ownership patterns, and new policies will determine whether land remains accessible to family farmers and rural communities.
  • How can agroecology play a role? EU countries have developed policies that support agroecological farming—Ukraine can learn from these experiences.
  • What policies will secure fair land access? Legislation must prevent land grabbing and ensure long-term stability for those who grow food.

Voices from Ukraine and Europe

The conference will bring together policymakers, researchers, and agroecological practitioners to discuss:

  1. Land rights and ownership trends in Ukraine – What has changed during the war, and what are the long-term effects?
  2. Public involvement in land management – Lessons from European countries on regulating land markets and supporting sustainable farming.
  3. Agroecological initiatives in Ukraine and the EU – Practical examples of resilient farming models.
  4. Protection of small farmers’ land rights – A European perspective on securing land for food production, not speculation.
