The Access to Land Network is excited to invite you to a pivotal event on land access and policy in Europe! Our upcoming A2L Seminar on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) will take place on January 29, 2024, at Maison du Chant d’Oiseau in Brussels. This seminar is a unique opportunity for policymakers, researchers, farmers, and advocates to come together and discuss strategies for improving land access in support of agroecology.

The first day of the seminar is open to the public and will focus on understanding the history, evolution, and current structure of the CAP, with an emphasis on land issues. The discussions will provide valuable insights into how the CAP can be leveraged to promote sustainable land use and agroecological practices.

  • Introduction and Welcome Session (9:00 – 9:30 AM)A warm opening to set the stage for the seminar.
  • How is CAP Structured Today? (9:30 – 11:00 AM)Sophie Helaine, Head of Unit Policy Performance at DG AGRI, European Commission, will explain the key changes in the 2023-2027 CAP reform and share insights on how change happens within EU institutions.
  • Power Analysis of the CAP (11:30 AM – 12:45 PM)Marco Contiero, EU Policy Director on Agriculture at Greenpeace, will explore power dynamics in CAP decision-making and discuss opportunities for advocacy and influence in upcoming negotiations.
  • Exploring the Links Between the CAP and Land Issues (2:30 – 4:00 PM)William Loveluck, researcher at Terre de Liens, will present his latest research on CAP and its impact on land access, ownership, and distribution.
  • Legal Framework of CAP on the Environment (4:30 – 5:45 PM)Germain Haumont, public and environmental law expert from UCLouvain – Saint-Louis Bruxelles, will provide an in-depth analysis of CAP’s legal mechanisms related to environmental sustainability.
