The Regionalwert AG was founded in 2006 as a citizen shareholder corporation, located in the area of Freiburg im Breisgau. Its objective is to support the structural development of organic agriculture and local food production, marketing and distribution. It has collected about €3 millions from 600 mostly local shareholders. The capital is invested in farms and associated land, processing businesses (caterer, processor), marketing businesses (retail and wholesale shops, box delivery) plus a network support structure (accountancy, research, start-up coaching).

As part of its operation, RWAG has developed a detailed methodology to report on the social, economic and environmental impact if its investments in the region.
