On 22 September, the EU-wide campaign People4Soil will start a petition to gather one million signatures asking EU institutions to adopt a specific legal framework on soil protection.
People4Soil brings together over 300 organisations from across Europe. It aims to recognise soil as a common good and to encourage EU institutions to adopt a legal framework to protect European soils and their quality.
Soils are more and more degraded in Europe by erosion, contamination, and sealing (concreting over) even though they provide the basis for food security, biodiversity and the entire environment. This degradation to takes place in the absence of any legal restrictions by the EU. There is a need of a strong protection on soils to ensure their preservation and sustainable use.
