The BioBoden Cooperative (Genossenschaft) from Germany is celebrating its first anniversary.
The mission of BioBoden is to enable the preservation and further development of regional, organic and diverse agriculture in Germany by buying land out of the market and keeping it away from speculation. Furthermore Bioboden facilitates access to land for farmers by enabling them to lease the land at a fair rate. It works with both existing farms as well as to newcomers. Organic farming is the condition.
The roots of the BioBoden cooperative go back to the pioneer work of the GLS bank, trust and foundation in organic farming since the 1960s. Since 2009, the BioBoden Gesellschaft (Society) purchased land to preserve it in organic farming. It notably enabled enabled the "biosphere reserve" Schorfheide-Chorin which is -with 2.500 hectares - part of the largest coherent organic farming area in Europa.
The BioBoden cooperative was established in 2015 to enable citizens to take responsibility for our land through a cooperative. Over the past year, more than 1.950 people have become members and have enabled access to land.
