Rurbans is a non-profit association established in 2003 in Pallars Sobirà, a highland Pyrenean county in the north of Catalonia. Its mission is to rejuvenate the Pyrenean and rural areas of Catalonia through innovative and participatory projects. The spirit of Rurbans lies in the conviction that rural areas can be lively economic, social and cultural areas and that this revitalisation will include agriculture. Rurbans wants to restore the pride of being a peasant and to recover and renew the rich array of peasants’ practices in Catalonia.
It revalorises the trade of being a shepherd or cattle breeder, and highlights existing local knowledge and know-how. It is trying to create an optimum environment to help this new generation of farmers and to facilitate generational renewal by providing them with the support and training that they need.
Areas of expertise: 1) Adult training in peasant's knowledge: the School of Peasantry and Cattle Farming of Catalonia, 2) Access to land 3) Advice and monitoring service for farmers and new entrant farmers, 4) Marketing of local wool, 5) Awareness raising among the youth and 6) Employment exchange.
