Access To Land

Land use: state and outlook

2020

This report is part of a series of a broader assessement of environmental issues in Europe, conducted by the European Environment Agency in 2020. It focuses on land use in Europe, i.e. how land is used, for diverse human activities - e.g. urban development, agriculture, forestry - or as natural areas.

The report analyses the main current data and trends with regard to land use. It shows the continuation of a strong trend towards specialisation in land-use, in the form of urbanisation, agricultural intensification, abandonment and afforestation. It also assesses the environmental impacts of land-use changes and of the intensification in land use, and reviews some policy areas and tools which could help address conflict in land use and promote land uses better adapted to environment protection.
